Chief Operating Officer
With more than 30 years in the hospitality industry, Thomas (Tom) Klein was brought onto the Canyon Ranch team in 2016 as Chief Operating Officer. As COO, Klein directs all operational aspects of the company businesses, overseeing operations of all brand extensions – Canyon Ranch in Tucson, Arizona, Canyon Ranch in Lenox, Massachusetts, SpaClub® Las Vegas at the Venetian and Palazzo Hotels, and SpaClubs at Sea onboard 20 cruise ships. During his respected time with the brand, Klein has been responsible for overall fiscal operating and planning, managing owner relations, and providing strategic input on new development opportunities.
Born in Germany and fluent in German, Klein has extensive experience in managing multiple unit luxury hotels and resorts in both domestic and international markets. He began his early career in various management positions across the country for Hyatt Hotels Corporation, including positions in Columbus, Ohio, Memphis, Los Angeles, and Scottsdale, Arizona. He then acted in several roles for Ritz Carlton Hotel Company, including General Manager of The Ritz Carlton Sydney, where he successfully launched the brand’s first international hotel. Following his time with The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, Klein was the General Manager for Hayman Island Resort, a five-star island destination in North Queensland, Australia, where he oversaw a multi-million dollar renovation. He then moved to South Africa to work as General Manager for The Palace Hotel, a Sun International Hotels & Resorts property. During this time in South Africa, Klein also acted as Chief Operating Officer for Simola Golf & Country Estate and then as Mӧvenpick Hotels and Resorts’ Senior Vice President for Africa and Managing Director of Karos Hotels Limited.
Prior to joining Canyon Ranch, Klein dedicated 15 years to Fairmont Raffles Hotels International and its sister company Swissӧtel Hotels and Resorts. He began his tenure as Senior Vice President of Operations and Vice President of Development for Raffles International Limited, and then acted as Regional Vice President and General Manager, overseeing three hotels in the United States and South America. He then transferred to San Francisco, where he was the Regional Vice President and General Manager for Fairmont Raffles Hotels International. During his time there, Klein directed all aspects of seven hotel operations for the brand’s California-based properties, including overall operations of the flagship hotel, Fairmont San Francisco. He also worked closely with the development team during the purchase of the Claremont Hotel in Berkeley, California.
An innovative strategist with proven leadership skills, Klein has demonstrated the ability to analyze a situation to achieve desired results. He graduated from Boston University with a Bachelors of Arts degree in sociology, and later received his MBA Certificate from Loyola University. Most recently, Klein was appointed as an Advisory Board Member of the Cornell Institute for Healthy Futures. He has remained actively involved in his communities as well, holding various positions on executive boards of local charities, and also enjoys golfing, camping, motorcycles and traveling.
