Vikram Tiwari
Vikram Tiwari, Ph.D. is Professor of Anesthesiology, Biomedical Informatics, and Biostatistics at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, and of Management at the Owen Graduate School of Management, Vanderbilt University. He also has an appointment at the Vanderbilt University Hospital as the Senior Director, Surgical Analytics Perioperative Services. He was an Assistant Professor of Supply Chain Management at the University of Houston from 2007-2012. He teaches Healthcare Operations, and Healthcare Analytics courses in the M.B.A. and M.M.H.C programs at the Owen Graduate School of Management.
Prof. Tiwari has a doctorate in Decision Science and Operations Management from Indiana University Bloomington and has Electronics & Communication engineering and Master of Business Administration degrees.
Prof. Tiwari’s research interests are in operational improvement and capacity management of healthcare delivery systems. He was the principal investigator for a grant from the VA Houston on improving operating room efficiencies. He has been a co-investigator on several other grants and healthcare industry projects. He has mentored medical school students, junior medical school faculty, post-doc fellows, K-12 physicians, industrial engineering doctoral student and several Master of Supply Chain Management and Engineering school Students. He has published over 40+ research articles in operations management and research journals, as well as in medical and healthcare journals.
Prof. Tiwari heads the Operations Research group of the Department of Anesthesiology and supports systems engineering projects across the Vanderbilt University Medical Center enterprise (Operations Research | Department of Anesthesiology).
Prof. Tiwari’s research on predicting surgical volume was selected for presentation in the Best Abstracts session at the American Society of Anesthesiologists conference (Oct 2013). He was interviewed for a radiocast for his research on using process control methodologies to evaluate improvements in first case on-time starts. Prof. Tiwari received the ‘OR Business Manager of the Year 2020’ award from the OR Managers society for his contributions towards developing and disseminating new knowledge for management of operating rooms through data-based decision making.
Prof. Tiwari has held numerous offices of the College of Healthcare Operations Management of the Production and Operations Management Society (POMS) including President from 2011-2015, and Board Member of POMS (2011-2013). In collaboration with other healthcare organizations, he has organized several healthcare mini-conferences and led best research paper competitions. He was the president of the Health Applications Society of INFORMS for 2017 and was the Program Chair for the INFORMS Healthcare 2015 Nashville conference. He was a co-Program Chair for the 2023 POMS annual meeting.
