Detailed Event Information:

The symposium will open with a welcome reception on the evening of Thursday, May 11. Our full-day symposium will start on Friday, May 12, to explore how decision makers and designers can respond to changing needs in mental health, work life balance, wellness, safety by design, affordable senior living, and other related areas. Together industry experts, academic scholars, leaders, and students will explore current challenges and possible evidence-based solutions with an interdisciplinary perspective.

Following the symposium, the third day, Saturday, May 13, will feature a more intimate hands-on thought design Reimagining Assisted Living Workshop led by Troy Savage. Designers will join healthcare and assisted living leaders to collaborate in an interactive day of re-imagining the design of communities in response to changing needs. We are providing 8 hours of AIA HSW CEU approved course content for the Reimagining Assisted Living Workshop.

$270 – $525

Student scholarships are available. Student registration is full. 

Symposium Registration Fee Includes (per participant): Attendance at the Thursday Reception and Friday Symposium.  Food and beverage at the reception, Friday breakfast, breaks, and lunch. A symposium activity of your choice (i.e. a nature walk, hands on art activity, or the healing waters immersive experience).

Reimagining Assisted Living Workshop Registration Fee Included (per participant): Attendance at the Friday night workshop dinner and Saturday hands-on workshop. Saturday breakfast, breaks, and lunch.

Affordable Senior Living Panel moderated by Severine Petras, speakers include Jay Woolford and Mitch Brown
The demand for affordable senior living is high, and there is a growing need for senior living options for low-income and middle-income older adults. Finding affordable senior living is crucial for older adults who are living on fixed incomes. It is even more vital for older adults who are living below the national poverty level. This session will identify challenges and opportunities within the affordable senior living industry.
Hospitable Health with Peter Yesawich and Stowe Shoemaker
This session will include a presentation and discussion of recent primary research conducted with U.S. adults on the major service gaps in healthcare, and introduce select hospitality service strategies that may be adopted to enhance the patient experience.
Health Equity Panel moderated by Julie Carmalt, speakers include Winnie Cudjoe, Jeff Niederdeppe, and Troy Savage
Health equity means the attainment of the highest level of health for all people, where everyone has a fair and just opportunity to attain their optimal health. This session explores how hospitality, environmental design, and health policy impact healthcare service and quality, and ultimately, health and wellbeing.
Beyond Boundaries with Gerard van Girnsven and Oliver Olsson
Invent an unorthodox vision for healthcare and be prepared to rethink the fundamentals of how hospitality, real estate and the healthcare industry operate.
Healing Waters Immersive Experience with Connie Lin
This gallery features an immersive sensory waterscape that was designed to help visitors reduce stress and find a sense of calm amidst the end-of-semester hustle and bustle of academic life. In addition, findings and design recommendations from the “Bluescapes” study conducted earlier this year will be on display.
Nature Walk with Don Rakow
Join Don on a nature walk through the Cornell Botanic Gardens. 
Hands-on Art with Tina Mullen
Participants will actively engage in a creativity session using wordless, improvisational communication to produce a collaborative work of art.
Evidence Based Design moderated by Mardelle Shepley, speakers include Kati Peditto and Rosayln Cama
Evidence-based design (EBD)provides state-of-the-art knowledge regarding the creation of user-supportive environments. This panel, composed of an award-winning interior designer, a psychologist/research director in a design firm, and an academic/architect, will discuss the meaningof EBD, its history and the future role it will play in promoting wellness.
Senior Living Design Panel moderated by Meredith Oppenheim, speakers include Esther Greenhouse, Siobhan Farvardin, and Catherine Montgomery
This panel will explore current challenges, emerging trends and future opportunities within and beyond the four walls of senior housing. Participants will gain a greater understanding of how the industry is evolving to navigate changing circumstances and prepare for a new generation who needs, wants and expects something quite different than the status quo.
Wellness in Hospitality moderated by Tim McCarthy, speakers include Jessica Cooper, Mindi Morin and Garnie Nygren
This panel focuses on insights into the opportunities and challenges associated with the application of the principles of wellness to hospitality. From designing spaces to designing guest experiences, how can wellness improve hospitality?
