Saturday, March 4
11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Statler Hall 198
The role of the built environment on the functioning and well-being of older adults is powerful and often underestimated. In this workshop, students will learn about the foundational theory which impacts older adults, and can be the key to harnessing the power of the built environment to enable this population to thrive.
Through:
- exploration of design concepts (universal, adaptable, inclusive)
- an overview of demographic and social drivers
- examination of typical age-related sensory and ability changes
- a sensitivity training
- and a recommendations exercise
participants will gain a deeper understanding of the barriers and solutions which shape the lives of older adults.
The workshop will be held at the Statler School of Hotel Administration, with the sensitivity training conducted in the Statler Hotel–reinforcing CIHF’s focus on health, hospitality, and design. It is free of charge and open to students in all departments.
The workshop is being conducted by one of CIHF’s Industry Scholar’s: Esther Greenhouse, M.S., CAPS, BS ’93, MS ’03, an environmental gerontologist and designer. Ms. Greenhouse is considered a national expert in universal design and aging in place.
